Biometrics: Fingerprints and Beyond

Successful biometrics technology demands highly accurate biological images. AuthenTec, based in Melbourne, Florida, developed a sensor that goes beyond the usual practice of employing optics to recognize a fingerprint’s peaks and valleys. AuthenTec’s sensor employs radio frequencies (RFs) to excite molecules in the living layer of skin where fingerprints are formed. “This RF technology allows us to overcome surface conditions of the skin, where fingerprints can be worn, calloused, dirty, or oily,” says AuthenTec president Larry Ciaccia.

AuthenTec supplies its biometrics component to consumer electronics manufacturers for use in more than 55 million PCs, cell phones, and other biometrics-enabled products.

LG recently announced its second Windows Mobile device for the U.S. market -- the eXpo. This device is more than a mere smartphone, however, and has a trick, removable pico projector for showing your friends movies...er...colleagues those PowerPoint presentations you've been working on.

Users will first need to register their fingerprint with the phone, which takes a few sample swipes. Basically, put the first joint of whichever finger you want to register along the sensor and swipe your finger downward. The fingerprint can then be set as a password for nearly any application on the phone. Need to unlock the home screen? Swipe! need to open the email program? Swipe! Need to access sensitive corporate files? Swipe! You get the picture.

LG eXpo is the first, and fastest, projector phone

AT&T and LG today announced the LG eXpo, a Windows Mobile 6.5 phone that features a number of firsts for the U.S. smartphone market. The LG eXpo will use a 1GHz processor, like the European HTC HD2 we recently reviewed, and this makes the LG eXpo the first phone on the U.S. market to hit the 1GHz mark. Clearly, a new round of GHz wars are upon us. The LG eXpo can also use the new LG Mobile Projector, a pico projector that snaps right onto the back of the LG eXpo. This makes the new device the first on the U.S. market with that functionality.

The LG eXpo also gets some interesting security options in the Smart Sensor, made by AuthenTec. The optical cursor at the bottom of the phone's face is also a fingerprint scanner, which eliminates the need for pass codes or unlock gestures. This could make the LG eXpo an enticing device for serious business users, along with the slide-out full QWERTY keyboard, a must for editing documents on the go. "The Blood and Guts of Biometric Systems"

When biometric security devices began appearing nearly a decade ago, they were often touted as the final word in security technology. After all, stealing your password is one thing -- stealing a thumb, a retina or a voice print is a bit more of a chore.

Hackers, however, developed techniques to fool biometrics scanners, much like they've found ways around spam filters and firewalls. Biometric device vendors, in turn, learned how to improve early scanners and algorithms to develop more ironclad security products.

“AuthenTec expands its market”

Computer makers are hoping "netbooks," smaller versions of notebook computers, will be a fast-growing product line.

If it is, Melbourne-based AuthenTec, a designer and manufacturer of fingerprint-sensor security technology, wants to be along for the ride.  AuthenTec's fingerprint sensor, which controls access to electronic devices like computers, cell phones and global positioning devices, is now a standard feature on ASUSTek Computer Inc.'s Eee PC 1004DN netbook.

"AuthenTec sensors on ASUS netbook"

AuthenTec Inc. has announced that its biometric fingerprint sensors are now a standard feature in a new ASUS netbook, the first netbook to include such a sensor.

Netbooks are generally less expensive than personal computer notebooks, have less features and a smaller screen — 10 inches or less. ASUS and Acer are regarded as the leading providers of netbooks around the world.

The netbook segment of the market grew to 10 million in 2008 and that total is expected to double in 2009.

“AuthenTec claims move forward in high-tech patent litigation”

Melbourne-based AuthenTec Inc. has claimed several courtroom wins in the back-and-forth litigation involving its patent infringement suit against rival Atrua Technologies Inc., AuthenTec said today.

AuthenTec said a California judge hearing the case found for the company in several recent legal moves by Atrua, which has countersued AuthenTec, accusing it of patent infringement.

Among the rulings, the judge denied Atrua's motion to add a claim of misappropriation of trade secrets to its suit; and rejected its motions for a preliminary injunction and temporary restraining order, according to AuthenTec.

"We are pleased with the continued progress on our patent infringement lawsuit and are confident that we have a strong patent infringement case," said Frederick Jorgenson, Vice President and General Counsel for AuthenTec.

“Hands on With Acer's F900 and M900 Smartphones”

Global PC vendor Acer made its first move into the smartphone market at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona last month and I had a chance to sit down and try out a few of the new devices in Taipei.

The handsets are all courtesy of a company called E-Ten Information Systems that Acer bought last year. The company originally designed GPS devices, which you'll find on nearly all of their smartphones, and expanded into smartphones a few years ago with Microsoft's Windows Mobile OS. I opted to try out the two coolest smartphones of the Acer Tempo family, the F900 and M900.

Below the screen on the face of the M900 is a small fingerprint identification tab, the principal way you sign into the phone and access information. Cool. Even better is that same tab can be used for navigation on the handset if you get tired of the touchscreen.

Although not the world’s first phone with a biometric reader – Fujitsu already has 16 others, apparently – the F-01A’s combined waterproofing means that your data’s secure whether you drop the talker into a river or the hands of a mugger.
